What can you do?
- Make sure your dog is always on a lead when around the Harbour foreshore
- Don't litter
- Desex your cat and try to keep it indoors after dark
- Stay away from any area where you think Little Penguins may have a nest
- Domestic pets are not allowed in Sydney Harbour National Park, Council wildlife
protection area or Little Penguin critical habitat area. Find out more at the NPWS
web site
- If you find a dead or injured penguin please call NPWS on 9977 6732 or Taronga
Zoo on 1900 920 218. They will advise you on what to do with the bird and what information
to collect from it (such as band number and type of injury).
- Do not remove or dump rubbish or vegetation on the foreshores of Sydney Harbour.
Clearing of vegetation from foreshore areas and dumping of garden clippings on these
areas has caused the destruction of several penguin burrows in Sydney Harbour.
- If you see anyone interfering with or causing harm to a little penguin or a penguin
burrow contact the NPWS on 9977 6732 and collect as much information as possible including
the persons name and taking photos.
- Let us know if you've been lucky enough to see a Little Penguin in Sydney Harbour
on http://life.csu.edu.au/penguins
- Manly Council also has some information relating to the Little Penguin Aware program.
