Welcome ...
Little Penguins (also known as Fairy Penguins) once nested in burrows and among rocks all along Sydney's harbour foreshore. Since Australia was settled
by Europeans over 200 years ago the population of Little Penguins in the Sydney region has significantly decreased, mostly due to increasing urbanisation.
We're fortunate that a small, but viable, population still survives around the
Sydney Harbour foreshore. Our aim is to increase awareness of the plight of the Little
Penguins in the urban environment and help the people of Sydney learn to co-exist
with a penguin colony in the harbour.
Urbanisation
Increasing urbanisation has greatly reduced native vegetation around the Sydney foreshore. Tree dieback and weed infestation is common and the coastal banksia
scrub that once dominated this environment has now been largely replaced by introduced species such as lantana and coral trees. This has directly affected
the nesting habits of the Little Penguins.
As they are relatively defenseless it's important that we do all we can to help them survive and thrive.
